How to Choose the Best Sleeping Mat For Your Adventures

There has been huge advances in sleeping mat technology over recent years. So what are the key considerations to make when choosing a suitable camping mat?

A great night’s sleep is really important when you’re out camping, hiking, hunting or on any other outdoor adventure. A good camping mat provides comfort and warmth so that you get a restful sleep and wake up full of energy, ready to go for another day. Having a suitable sleeping pad is going to make all the difference. But there are so many choices, so many specs and features, and some very pricey sleeping mats.

Here’s a quick guide to help you get the best sleeping mat for you and your next trip.

  1. What kind of camping?

Adventure camping: If you’re tramping, hunting, bike packing … really any outdoor pursuit where you are carrying your own gear, then low weight and small packed size are the top priorities. Look for lightweight, compact mats like inflating mats that are easy to carry and inflate (many mats now come with carry bags that double as pumps).

If you are 'Car Camping' and don't need to carry your mat in, weight and packed size are less important, so you can focus on selecting a product based on comfort, thickness, and greater cushioned mats.

  1. Insulation and R-Value ratings for warmth

The R-value measures a mat’s insulation ability. Higher R-values (4 and above) are better for cold conditions, providing more warmth and preventing heat loss to the ground. For summer camping, a lower R-value (around 1 to 2.5) should be ok.

  1. Comfort and Thickness

Thicker mats (8-10cm) usually mean that they are more comfortable and supportive, especially if you’re a side sleeper. Air mats and self-inflating mats usually provide the best comfort, while closed-cell foam mats are thinner but more durable.

  1. Ease of Use

Some mats require more effort than others to set up. Self-inflating mats are convenient, inflating on their own with minimal effort. You need to inflate air mats, either by mouth or with a pump, but they’re often more compact and comfortable. Foam mats are the simplest to use—just unroll them and you’re set.

  1. Types of mats

Foam mats: Lightweight, durable, cheap, just roll them out and you’re good to go. But thinner and not as comfortable as other options and bulkier to carry.

Self-inflating mats: A combo of foam and air, when the valve is opened the foam expands drawing air into the mat. They are easy to set up with good insulation and comfort, but are heavier and bulkier than air mats.

Air mats: Inflatable sleeping pads that need to be inflated. Usually very compact and lightweight, comfortable and often insulated for use in colder temps. Great for ultralight activities but on the downside it takes a bit of effort to inflate them and can be susceptible to punctures or leaks.

  1. Budget

Camping mats come in a wide range of prices. The quality of your sleep is at stake for bigger missions, so it’s worth investing in a mat that balances cost with comfort, durability, and insulation.

Choosing the right camping mat depends on your specific needs, including the type of camping you do, the weather conditions, and your personal comfort preferences. Think about factors like weight, insulation, durability, and ease of use, you’ll be dreaming under the stars. Happy camping!
